Mark L. Berenson
CUNY Baruch College

Mark L. Berenson is a Professor of Statistics and currently serves on the faculty of the Baruch/Mount Sinai Graduate Program in Health Care Administration that he directed from 1988 through 1991. He recently served as Regional Councilor, Health Care Division, of the American Society for Quality Control and has been Chair, Statistics & Sports Section of the American Statistical Association. From 1989 through 1992 he served as President of the New York Metropolitan Area Chapter of the American Statistical Association.

Noted for his innovative pedagogical approaches to the subject of statistics, Dr. Berenson is a recipient of both the Baruch College Presidential Teacher of the Year Award and the Dean's Award for Continued Excellence in Teaching. He is also a co-recipient of an Honorable Mention Certificate in the National Alpha Iota Delta Awards Competition for Outstanding Innovative Instruction sponsored by the Decision Sciences Institute. Dr. Berenson has co-authored eleven books and manuals, all published by Prentice-Hall. Through his books and professional activities, Dr. Berenson has had a major role in course development in the field of statistics and has given numerous talks on pedagogical approaches. As Chairman of the School of Business Undergraduate Curriculum Committee at Baruch College, Dr. Berenson was instrumental in asserting the importance of integrating curriculum developments with pedagogical approaches that transcend disciplines within and across schools and involve active and collaborative learning. He believes we must reduce our lecturing and empower the students to learn more on their own and through teamwork. He argues that we must develop the students' critical thinking skills so that we can manage our classrooms more effectively by acting as coaches and facilitators. With such developments, Dr. Berenson feels that the future graduates will not only be better prepared to take their place as citizens of their communities but they also will be more prepared to experience a lifetime of self-learning in a dynamic world.

Dr. Berenson has also been involved in clinical research and health care consulting. From 1984 to 1988 he served as a Visiting Investigator in the Biostatistics Laboratory of the Memorial-Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. His articles have appeared in numerous statistics and medical journals.
