Gary Sundem

Gary Sundem is the Julius A Roller Professor of Accounting and Co-Chair of the Department of Accounting at the University of Washington. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (1974-75), at Cornell University (1977-78), and INSEAD, Fontainebleau, France (1987).

Professor Sundem holds a BA (1967) from Carleton College and an MBA (1969) and Ph.D. (1971) from Stanford University. He has been President of the American Accounting Association (1992-93, Editor of The Accounting Review (1982-86), and AAA Distinguished International Lecturer (1990). He currently chairs the Accounting Accreditation Committee of the AACSB. He was Executive Director of the Accounting Education Change Commission in 1989-91, is active in the Institute of Management Accountants and the Financial Executives Institute.

Professor Sundem is co-author of two best-selling textbooks, Introduction to Financial Accounting (with C. Horngren and J. Elliott) and Introduction to Management Accounting (with C. Horngren and W. Stratton). His publications have appeared in many journals in the U.S. and abroad, including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Management Accounting, and Journal of Finance. He has made over 150 presentations at universities in the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. Sundem was named the 1998 Outstanding Accounting Educator by the American Accounting Association and the 1987 Outstanding Accounting Educator by the Washington Society of CPAs. He received the 1977 AICPA-AAA Award for the Notable Contribution to Accounting Literature. Dr. Sundem has been a consultant to many organizations in government and industry and has been active in many civic activities. His teaching interests are primarily in managerial accounting, and his research interests include the economics of information, cost accounting systems, accounting and MBA education, and trends in the accounting profession.
