- Economics and Happiness
http://economics.tqn.com/library/weekly/aa051498.htm
- How happy are you, and does it depend on the economy? According to recent research summarized at the Mining Company’s Economics Web site, people’s reported "happiness," as measured by the annual United States General Social Survey is negatively correlated with both inflation and unemployment rates. The news media often reports on the "misery index," the sum of the current inflation and unemployment rates, but is often overlooked by economists. Perhaps we should pay more attention to the misery index than we currently do; it may provide insights not only about the economy but about human happiness as well.

What role does education play in our society today, in terms of economic advancement? Have the benefits of higher education increased or decreased during the 1900s? - Issue of the Week: Social Security -- June 1-7, 1998
http://www.policy.com/issuewk/98/0601/index.html
- One of the most important issues facing the U.S. economy early in the next century is how to handle an aging population. While the U.S. is currently enjoying a budget surplus, as baby-boomers begin to retire and collect Medicare and Social Security benefits those surpluses are forecast to vanish, eventually necessitating higher taxes, cuts in other government programs, or changes in the Medicare and Social Security programs. At this site and its associated Web links you can find out about the history of the Social Security program in the U.S., the future demographic challenges facing the government, and proposals to privatize the Social Security system. What impact would these reform proposals have on the U.S. economy and various economic groups in the economy?
