These are some manual indices of WWW-based information useful for finding well-known services. Yahoo features a hierarchically organized subject tree.

The UK Index is a manually maintained index of resources in the UK
Alta Vista has access to 8 billion words in 16 million web pages. It also has an index of 13,000 news groups updated in real-time.

These indices of WWW-based resources are generated by robots, and therefore very complete, but are more likely to find too much information.Lycos is probably the largest.
WebCrawler is smaller, but perhaps more up-to-date.
InfoSeek is commercial, but has a limited free demo facility.

ArchiePlex is a full-featured Archie gateway for the web, and locates files on Anonymous FTP sites.
Language List and Free Compilers and Interpreters List should be obvious.
Mac Software Catalog on Nexor is a Web view of Michigan's Mac Archive.
IBMPC Windows Archive is part of the HENSA/Micros archive.You might also check out the C/NET's shareware.com, with search engines for UNIX, Mac, Windows, DOS, Atari, Amiga etc.

Documents
URLs for WAIS, Wide Area Information System, are phasing out. In practice, all WAIS applications are nowadays gated to the Web using HTTP, and direct use of the WAIS protocol is no longer necessary. When creating Web proxy infrastructure, providing WAIS protocol support is an unlikely requirement. As a result, you may experience difficulty connecting to the WAIS servers.
